Editing Analysis

http://youtu.be/i5ufgkJ-uVE

I took this scene form YouTube; it’s from a movie called “Drive”. This scene is pretty intense and since I have not watched the whole film, the action of this scene was unexpected.  In the beginning of the scene, we hear the elevator closing sound then the sound changes to something dramatic as the guy looks at the other guy. When the character with the jacket looks at the man wearing a white suit, the scene of that shows his eyes movement was very good, we the viewers can actually see what the guy with the jacket was looking at from his POV. Then the lighting and the music changes as he pulls the girl against the elevator and started kissing her. The soundtrack changed to something romantic and the lighting was brighter on them and the background slowly got darker. The music was perfect and it flows with the actions that were happening in this scene. However, when they stop kissing the lighting changes back to the lighting which was in the beginning of the scene.  I like the shot of the lower camera angle, when the guy with the jacket was kicking the other guy. In this shot we see the evil side of that character and his anger face emotions. In terms of editing this film, it was edited very well. All the actions, emotions, lighting and soundtracks were perfectly edited. When I was watching this short clip, I didn’t feel like anything was missing, I thought everything went together.

MoMA-- Lost Landmark of Black Film History: Exhibition--->Extra Credit

When I went to the 100 Years in Post-Production: Resurrecting a Lost Landmark of Black Film History: Exhibition, this exhibition is on uncut footage for an film that was not released during 1913. It was originally shot in 1913 and it was just discovered recently in MoMa’s Biography collection. It really inspired me in many different ways. First of all, it was pretty depressing seeing the roles of characters in the films. Black people were filmed as slaves, low class and ignorance just as how it used to be in the past.

These films did not have any audio tracts; it was shot with 35mm camera, which was used to film movies during that period of time. One of the films that I have enjoyed watching was “Merry Go around”, when the characters were riding on the rides it looked very fake. It was a still movement shot, the camera was placed in front of the characters, while the background had a different continually shots playing.  If this same film was shot today then it would have looked extremely different. Well, that’s because we have better cameras nowadays and everything are digitized.

Another scene that I have watch at the exhibition was called, “ Footrace”, it was about racing. This scene was shot with a very small frame that you can see the edge of the camera on the left corner. However,  the act of the characters and the way it was filmed it’s pretty comedy. I would strongly  recommend someone to go to this Exhibition, I had an amazing time looking around and reading about this exhibition.

Extra Credit-Asian Society Exhibition

When I went to the Asian Society Exhibition, I felt like I was in a very different place, around different culture. I was amazed with the things I have observed there. Everything was very cultural, Art and Robotic. The robotic part made me think how Earth’s future will be like few years from now on. We often hear and read articles about computers taking over everything that we have today, after looking at the things that the human had invented, I believe it is true. When I went by the entrance there is the admission staff for tickets and the Asia store. The Asia store has a lot of books and music items from Asian culture. All these books cover was beautifully designed and its very artistic. The Asia Society is devoted to promoting understanding among the people, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States. Typical programs include lectures, demonstrations, discussions about Asian arts and culture, policy and business. The Nam June Paik exhibit was amazing. From the vintage tv robots to the sitting Buddha, it was extremely unique. I visited "Iran modern" which gave me a well-represented and excellently explained guidance on what is happening on the art scene in modern Iran. Each section and period was also backed up with the related historical, political timeline. I will definitely recommend a friend to attend this amazing exhibition. There are so many things we can learn from this exhibition.
